Team 5135 Uncopyrightable have created a San Diego FTC discord server and they are inviting all teams to join! The San Diego FTC discord server is a place for teams in San Diego to communicate and cooperate about anything related to robotics. Anyone is welcome to ask for help or help others who may have questions about programming, CAD, fabrication, engineering notebook, outreach, etc.
Discord is a free communication application that is similar to Skype. In Discord anyone can create a server that other users can join and use text and voice chats. You can use discord through your web browser, your mobile device, or by downloading the mac/windows/linux application: https://discordapp.com/download The server has moderators and a full rule list on the server. You must be 13 years old to use discord. To join the San Diego FTC Discord server you can click this link and follow the directions: https://discord.gg/7u4HnAy

SDFTC Region, Most of you should have received a letter from Dean Kamen about FIRST's endeavor to honor the sacrifice made by teacher and astronaut Christa McAuliffe. What you may not know is that our own David Warner, FTC mentor/teacher at Roger Rowe, was one of the cadre of teachers considered for the "first teacher in space" and has been part of a team of teachers who honor Christa's memory. Please see the attached newspaper article about Mr. Warner and read/support the letter from Dean Kamen below! From Dean Kamen:
I am excited to let you know that Representatives Fred Upton (R-MI) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI) have introduced a Congressional bill that is very important to FIRST®. House Bill H.R.500 would instruct the United States Mint to issue a commemorative coin honoring astronaut and teacher Christa McAuliffe. As part of the FIRST community, we’re inspired to advocate for wider recognition of our nation’s STEM heroes. Christa was a New Hampshire native and scheduled to become the first teacher in space before she was tragically killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. Proceeds from coin sales would go directly to FIRST teams and serve as a meaningful tribute to an American school teacher hero. Passing this bipartisan legislation will not be easy. We need at least 290 members of the House to co-sponsor H.R.500, which means we need your help. Please take a moment to contact your Representative and urge them to co-sponsor H.R.500. We’ve provided a form at the link below to make it easy. Issue #20

This is an incredible opportunity. They have asked us to set up this giveaway next Saturday Dec 29th, 2018 @ 9am and 10am! They have enough printers to give away one per team in the region. Please come by the Robo3D Headquarters to pick up a free printer! Date: 12/29/2018 (Sat.) Location: 5070 Santa Fe St Suite C, San Diego, CA 92109 Sign up here! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f054fa9ac2ca5fd0-robo3d Please contact me if you have any questions. Jon Christopher, Mentor – 4216 Rise of Hephaestus jon.christopher@gmail.com Here are the details from Jerry at Robo3D:
"We are so grateful that we get to see these machines go to the best homes we can think of. We will make room in our warehouse for everyone to come in and access the inventory and also provide a side area for everyone to inspect what they have chosen. I will be available to provide a quick assessment of the units and take note of parts they might need with the help of students from team 4216. We will be providing structural parts of the machine for free. Parts like brackets and rods. Most machines can be expected to be in good operational or near operational shape. We will not be able to provide mainboards and hotends. We don't have inventory of these parts for the R1+. Those parts are easily found on the internet for very reasonable prices. No more than $50 total for a set of mainboard, LCD controller (really nice cheap upgrade!), wires, and hotend. We will provide links to those parts. Some electronics we can provide like, certain motors and certain fans, but inventory is limited on those items. It is likely that there will be very little need for those items on these units. I will be working with team 4216 to organize a Saturday workshop to help any team with any issues they are having at some time in the future and they are going to set up a forum for the region teams to collaborate on getting these units in fully operable condition. Lastly, We also have a lot of unopened 1KG ABS filament that we are happy to donate to each team that picks up a printer." Hosted by The Clueless 11212 FTC, Lagrange 10 FLL and Inspiration 11128 FTC! Jan. 5th 2019 9:00am to 1:00pm @ The Cambridge School, 12855 Black Mountain Road, 92129. The size is limited to the first 16 teams to register so please RSVP to Coach Olivia (olivia.tian@yahoo.com) from team Clueless.

The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) Pacific in Point Loma (San Diego) works with two summer internship programs designed for exceptional high school students and collegiate students who have an interest in a future career in the science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) fields. These internship programs provide an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. The goals of these programs are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.
